The Rays, 16-17, fell 2 to 1 in a pitching battle to end the series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays took two out of three against the good guys as this club continues to go a step forward and then one back.
In 3rd, the Rays went ahead 1 to 0 on an RBI single from Corey Dickerson, allowing Kevin Kiermaier to score after he reached on an error before. In the 6th, the Jays tied it up 1 to 1 as Alex Cobb pitched well. In the 8th, Darin Barney hit a solo home run to put the Jays ahead 2 to 1 and took the game. Tampa had 2 runners on in the 9th, but could not get it done.
Dickerson was 1 for 4 with the lone RBI as the team managed just 3 hits for the entire game and struck out 11 times. It was pretty frustrating to watch this one.
Alex Cobb (2-3) went 8 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 3 batters. Cobb did his best, but one mistake cost him as his offense struggled against the bullpen of Toronto. Danny Farquhar went the 9th, striking out 2 batters. The pitching was not the issue tonight in this game.
Things didn’t get better for the Durham Bulls, as they fell 4 to 3 in 12 innings to Norfolk, dropping their record to 20-8. Mallex Smith was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Patrick Leonard went 2 for 6 with 2 RBIs as he hit his 3rd home run of the year. Casey Gillaspie was 3 for 5 and scored a run. Ryan Yarbrough (ND) went 5.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, walking 3 and struck out 6 batters. Chih-Wei Hu, now working out of the bullpen more (per the Rays wanting him to work to work there now for some reason) worked a clean inning striking out 2 batters in relief.
